Signature Trail Assessments

The Province of New Brunswick has a vast network of trails. This project was focused on the assessment of the high yield destination trails and how they can be developed to create a sustainable economic impact for the region. The methodology included assessing trails in the following areas:

  • Pre-trip: This is an assessment of the elements available for the tourist when they are planning their trip such as: website and how to get there (i.e. accurate information to the designated entry points, signage to locate designated entry points, etc)

  • Entry and Access Points: this includes ensuring that the tourists have a clear and defined access point for parking and accessing the trail

  • On the Trail: This includes trail navigation and trail conditions and maintenance

  • Trail design: This includes assessing the trail route and alignment, conservation, safety and interpretation

  • Trail Experience: The reviews the overall brand/theme of the trail and how it connects with the tourist and the region as well as the natural features of the trail

  • Tourism Services and Amenities: Review of basic tourism services, access to communities, package/itinerary development, transportation, washrooms, garbage/waste disposal

New Brunswick Provincial Trails Strategy

On behalf of the New Brunswick Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture, Terminus Consulting lead a 2-year process to develop a 3-year trails strategy for the trail industry and key provincial stakeholder departments. This was a comprehensive exercise that took into consideration the needs and values of the entire trail industry. A key component of the process was engagement with the greater trail community, key government stakeholder departments and other external stakeholders such as the tourism and recreation sectors. Engagement was done through traditional face-to-face engagement, online engagement through Zoom and Teams, as well as utilizing surveys to gain a better understanding of the key issues facing the industry and what was needed to create a thriving and vibrant trail culture in New Brunswick. The Strategy will be launched in the spring of 2024

Bicycle Friendly program has been designed to provide businesses with the resources and tools they require to cater to the growing bicycle tourism industry in Nova Scotia. The program provides a basic set of criteria for businesses to meet in order for them to receive the Bicycle Friendly designation. These businesses will be profiled in publications and websites geared towards bicycle tourists and become part of a growing network of like-minded businesses through the province. Bicycle tourists are drawn to these businesses because they give them a sense of belonging and they know that they are going to be able to receive the kinds of services that they are looking for
